Brazilian holidaymaker among four walkers lost in Peak District

She was found by members of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team who had been called out by another walker who reported himself lost on Kinder Scout on Friday afternoon.

When the rescuers located the man who made the 999 call, the Brazilian holidaymaker was with him along with two walkers from Manchester who were also lost.

They were guided off the moor to Edale.

The rescuers said visibility was reduced to a few metres because of low cloud. It was also raining heavily and the moor was sodden.

Roger Bennett, from the mountain rescue team, said: “This was another example of people using mobile phones for navigation and underestimating the seriousness of our local hills and weather conditions.

"We urge everyone to carry a map and compass, torch and whistle on every visit to the moors.

"Technical navigational gadgets can lose signal or suffer flat batteries, so know how to read a map and use a compass properly. Your life may depend on it."
