British Transport Police aim to prosecute

TRAIN drivers in South Yorkshire were put on alert after a spate of attacks - including yobs hurling missiles and objects being left on the tracks.

Drivers reduced their speed when travelling through Swinton, Rotherham, after a stone was thrown at a Northern Rail service smashing the driver’s cab window at the back as it passed through the area on Sunday.

And on the same night British Transport Police were alerted when a Virgin train was forced to stop in the Swinton Curve area when the driver spotted a number of large metal objects on the line.

On Monday another train was forced to make an emergency stop in the same area after a number of concrete items described as “toughing lids” were left between the rail tracks.

A short time later a freight train was forced to stop after someone jumped out in front of the train and hurled stones at the driver’s cab.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “We take these types of offences extremely seriously and will actively seek to prosecute anyone who is involved in such crimes.”
