Burst pipe tears up road

A WATER main burst in Barnsley town centre tore a 4ft hole in a road surface and sent thousands of gallons of water surging down two streets.

Yorkshire Water workers were quickly on site after a 5in pipe ruptured under St Mary’s Gate yesterday morning, tearing up the tarmac and cobbles and sending water running down Church Street and Regent Street.

A spokeswoman for the water company said supplies were restored within half an hour after a temporary overland supply was installed. Repair work was due to be complete by lunchtime.

She said: “As far as we are aware there were no flooding issues and there was no risk of contamination to supplies. An investigation is due to start as soon as repairing the main is complete.”
