Burst water main causes Barnsley rush hour traffic chaos

TRAFFIC in Barnsley was delayed this morning after a water main burst through a road surface in the town centre.

Thousands of gallons of water flowed down Church Street and Regent Street after a main ruptured on St Mary's Gate at about 8am.

The burst tore out a 4ft wide circle of Tarmac and cobbles.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said they were alerted to the leak at 8.15am when people arrived at work to find they were without water.

Repair workers were on site by 8.50am, she added.

She said: "We apologise for any inconvenience. It is too early to say what caused it, our main concern is to keep as many people as possible supplied with water and get things back to normal as quickly as possible."
