Bus price war: Good or bad?

Is the price war between bus firms First and Stagecoach on popular South Yorkshire routes good news for passengers?

"I use public transport out of Sheffield - especially in London - far more than I do in Sheffield. The buses are expensive and unless I'm going somewhere unusual it's all in walking distance anyway.

"It's especially irritating that it's virtually impossible to get to or from the station on the bus, which is one time I'd be likely to use it.

Robert McIlveen, aged 25, of Crookes.

"My bus route, the 25 and 25A, over the last two years has been cut from four buses per hour to three buses per hour, there is no service after 7pm and there is no service at all on Sundays.

"The continual price hikes by First and buses missing from First have led me to stop paying my 54 per month for a First bus pass and start buying a 35 per month bus and tram pass from Stagecoach.

"Now the Travel Adda ticket has been withdrawn by First probably because of the price war.

"Because of the attitude of quite a few First bus drivers If there is an alternative way to travel I will use it rather than catch a First bus."

Kevan Smith, aged 50, of Manor.

"This isn't good because those living elsewhere don't benefit, in fact they lose out. I believe both First and Stagecoach should be got rid of and the only answer is bus services run by the SYPTE again.

Richard Roper, aged 58, of Gleadless.
