Car sharing website plea

MOTORISTS who live or work in Barnsley are being urged to log on to a new website, launched today, promoting car-sharing.

The site - www.carsharesouthyorkshire.com - aims to match together people who might share their car journeys, reducing congestion, cutting down on pollution, and helping with travel costs.

Staff at the council were the first to join the scheme and local businesses are also being urged to promote it among their workers.

The website is being launched just days after Barnsley was named one of the country’s traffic hotspots.

The number of vehicles on the borough’s roads has soared by 24 per cent over the past 10 years taking it to number eight in the worst 10 traffic locations.

The council says sharing car journeys even once a week can make a positive change.

Anyone who lives or works in the Barnsley borough and who is interested in sharing their journey can register on the site free of charge. The system will then tell them if anyone else is going in the same direction, leaving it up to them to make contact by email.
