Celebration's early start

HUNDREDS of scouts, cubs, beavers and explorers congregated in Sheffield's Peace Gardens for an 8am centenary celebration yesterday.

The Sunrise Ceremony in the city centre was one of hundreds of similar events staged all over the world to mark 100 years since Baden Powell held a camp on Brownsea island, which created the Scout movement.

The event was attended by Lord Mayor Coun Arthur Dunworth as well as boys, their parents, scouting leaders, and past members. Smaller local gatherings were staged at scout huts around South Yorkshire.
