City MP discusses democracy in school

A Sheffield MP visited a local school to speak with students about democracy.

Louise Haigh, MP for Sheffield Heeley, met with student representatives from the School Council of Springs Academy, in Gleadless.

After giving Miss Haigh a tour of the school, the students discussed their ideas with her around democracy, and told her all about their current programmes and achievements.

Miss Haigh said: “The children were very keen to have their voices heard.

“Having a School Council is a great way to involve pupils with ideas around democracy and I was pleased to see that they were keen to see changes made in their school. They explained to me how they had already achieved some of their plans and ideas, including a complete overhaul of their rewards programme.

“We had a great discussion on these improvements, as well as talking about plans to work together on political literacy. It was great to see Springs Academy embracing this way of working, and promoting getting their students’ voices heard within the school and taking charge of their political education.”
