City remembers Hiroshima with Lord Mayor's peace declaration

SHEFFIELD'S Lord Mayor met guests and signed a document for peace outside the Town Hall as part of the Hiroshima Day ceremony.

Coun Arthur Dunworth signed the Mayors for Peace declaration and spoke to Keiko Miya Moto, from Hiroshima, who is studying at Sheffield Hallam University.

Hiroshima Day is held in towns and cities across the world to commemorate the dropping of the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

Green Party councillor Jillian Creasy said: “The Green Party is vehemently opposed to both nuclear power and nuclear weapons.

“The Peace Gardens right next to the Town Hall was given its name on this day in 1985 so that the people of Sheffield would never forget the tragedy that nuclear weapons can bring.”
