Sheffield Crown Court heard on June 10 how Russell Mubeto, aged 31, of Wensley Street, Grimesthorpe, Sheffield, was followed by a police vehicle on Upwell Street and Holywell Street, Sheffield, after the defendant had been seen driving a Mercedes which was insured in a woman’s name.
Amy Earnshaw, prosecuting, said: “The defendant pulled onto Skelwith Road appearing to pull over and officers got out to speak to the defendant but the defendant accelerated away reaching 50mph in a 30mph area.”

Hide AdMs Earnshaw added Mubeto’s vehicle flew off the ground as he sped along a residential road with traffic-calming bumps and he failed to stop at a junction at the end of Rothay Road and he collided with a van.
Zimbabwean national Mubeto, who has previous convictions for motoring offences including drink-driving and driving while disqualified, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and to driving without insurance after the incident on June 18, 2020.
Rebecca Tanner, defending, said: “He made an extremely foolish decision to drive the vehicle. He then drives extremely recklessly and he is fortunate his driving did not have more serious consequences for him and others.”
She added: “He acknowledges what he has done and he is extremely sorry for his driving and grateful he is not in a more serious predicament.”

Hide AdMs Tanner said Mubeto has a daughter and he lives with his partner who has dependent children in Zimbabwe.
Judge David Dixon told Mubeto: “You drove at speeds of 50mph in residential-type areas over speed-bumps causing the car to fly in the air while the police were behind you.”
He sentenced Mubeto to 16 months of custody and disqualified him from driving for two years and eight months.
Judge Dixon added that he recognised Mubeto’s status in the UK may be affected by his offending and he may not be allowed to stay because he has failed to comply with driving laws.
