A man with a knife arrested in Sheffield city centre while an onlooker shouted ‘leave him alone’ was also wanted for kidnap and domestic violence.

The 26-year-old was detained after suspicions were were raised that he may have been armed after he was spotted on a CCTV camera.

Once apprehended, checks revealed that he was wanted for questioning over a kidnap offence and domestic violence.

South Yorkshire Police said a member of the public shouted at officers as they made their arrest.

The force said: “After being alerted by city centre CCTV of a suspicious male possibly in possession of a knife a 26-year-old male was detained after a short foot chase.

“Turns out he was also wanted on suspicion of kidnap and domestic assault.

“It was interesting how when we detained the male with a knife, who was also wanted for a very serious offence, someone shouted ‘leave him alone’. We’ll leave that comment there.”
