Sheffield Crown Court heard on June 23 how Liam Gilmartin, aged 22, of Broadway East, East Dene, Rotherham, threatened to kill his ex, threatened to damage cars belonging to the woman and her family, and sent malicious messages to her.
Beverly Wright, prosecuting, said: “The complainant was in a relationship with the defendant from July 2019, and it ended on April 17, 2020, after she found out he had been seeing someone else and she had contracted a sexually transmitted infection, and she contacted his other partner to warn them.”

The complainant blocked a mobile phone she had bought Gilmartin, according to Ms Wright, but he became angry and she received an ‘unknown caller’ voicemail from
Gilmartin saying: “I’m going to shoot you up and come to your yard.”
Gilmartin’s ex-partner stated she was petrified, especially after she saw a picture of Gilmartin with a gun on Snapchat, but this was not sent to the complainant.

Hide AdThe defendant, who has two previous convictions within a domestic context, pleaded guilty to sending malicious messages between April 17 and May 21, making threats to kill on May 21 and threatening to cause damage on May 21.
Joy Merriam, defending, said the photo of Gilmartin with a gun had not been sent to the victim and she claimed the victim did not think he would carry out the threats to damage her car and he did not intend to go to her home.
She added Gilmartin needs to develop an awareness of respectful behaviour in relationships and he needs to engage in a programme to understand the harm caused to victims.
Judge David Dixon said: “Regrettably, this is the sort of pattern this court sees too often and the messages are not pleasant.”
