Shootings in Sheffield: a timeline of the gun violence and how police have responded

Sheffield has been rocked by a recent spate of shootings, which have left several people injured.

The surge in gun crime includes four shootings in the space of 24 hours during May, which left four men injured, two homes damaged and two cars hit.

Police have responded by stepping up patrols and carrying out numerous raids, resulting in a number of arrests and the seizure of a ‘significant amount’ of drugs and weapons.

Here's a timeline showing when and where shootings have taken place across the city this year and some of the action that’s been taken.

JANUARY 4: A man is shot on Staniforth Road in Darnall.

JANUARY 7: A 44-year-old man is shot in the arm on Carlisle Street in Burngreave.

JANUARY 10: An imitation pistol is fired in front of stunned revellers at Kettle Black bar on Ecclesall Road following a fight. Luca Premi, 24, was jailed for three years after admitting assault, possession of an imitation firearm and possession of a bladed article.

JANUARY 10: On the same day, a gun is fired on Northcote Avenue in Meersbrook.

JANUARY 12: A 12-year-old boy, described by police as an innocent bystander, is injured in a drive-by shooting on Northern Avenue in Arbourthorne. Three men, aged 23, 25 and 26, have been charged in connection with the shooting.

JANUARY 24: A man, 22, is shot in a car on Hill Street, near Bramall Lane.

FEBRUARY 18: A 24-year-old man is taken to hospital after being found with gunshot wounds to his neck and back on William Street, Broomhall.

FEBRUARY 22: Two men, aged 34 and 27, are shot when gunmen burst into a house on Shirland Place, in Darnall. Three men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder before being released under investigation.

FEBRUARY 25: A 45-year-old man is shot at a house on Westland Grove in Westfield. Details of the attack were only released by police in April, as they appealed for information.

FEBRUARY 29: A boy, aged 16, and a 30-year-old man are shot on Thirlwell Road in Heeley, during the early hours. The 30-year-old was later arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and drink driving.

APRIL 3: Hardy's Gunsmiths on Alderson Road in Highfield is raided during the early hours. A councillor has since linked this incident with the subsequent spate of shootings and called for tighter controls on such shops to prevent weapons falling into the wrong hands, though there is no evidence any weapons taken from the store were used in the ensuing violence. Three men, two aged 19 and the other 33, have been charged over the break-in

APRIL 16: A 21-year-old man is shot in the chest on Grimesthorpe Road in Burngreave. Witnesses said they heard four shorts being fired from a white car towards a black car that afternoon and told how a carer from a nearby care home ran into the street to give the victim CPR.

MAY 8: In the first of four shootings in the space of less than 24 hours, three men are wounded when a gun is fired at a group standing together on the street on Grimesthorpe Road just after midnight. Police said it was not believed to be linked to the earlier shooting on the same road.

MAY 8: Two hours later, another man, aged 53, is wounded in the arm and leg when a gun is fired at a flat on Club Garden Road in Sharrow.

MAY 8: At around 6.45pm that day, two rival groups open fire at each other on Machon Bank in Nether Edge, damaging a house and two cars. A firearm is later recovered nearby and a 20-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear or harm.

MAY 8: The final shooting that day takes place on nearby Union Road, where, after being called at around 7.30pm, police find damage to a window.

MAY 9: Dramatic footage shows armed police arresting two men, aged 20 and 23, on Broom Valley Road in Rotherham, in connection wtih the shootings in Nether Edge. The 20-year-old is later charged with drug offences.

MAY 14: Members of the community in Nether Edge say ‘enough is enough’ in the wake of the shootings, as they vow to reclaim the streets from drugs dealers and anti-social gangs which have been plaguing the area. They reveal how a CCTV camera which was removed from Machon Bank is being restored and residents are working with the fire service to increase reporting of anti-social behaviour, among other measures.

MAY 14: A gun is fired on Farish Place, Heeley, where holes are found in a parked car and a road sign. A 22-year-old man is later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, following a raid on nearby Derby Street.

MAY 24: Shots are fired at a house on Fishponds Road in Woodthorpe at around 10pm by an unknown man on a bike.

MAY 25: Shots are fired at a house and parked car on Myrtle Road in Heeley.

MAY 26: Three men, aged 18, 36 and 42, are arrested in connection with the shootings on May 24 and 25, on suspicion of firearms offences, assault and criminal damage.

MAY 28: Three more people are arrested in connection with the recent shootings, following a series of raids. A 46-year-old man is arrested on suspicion of possessing firearms ammunition, after officers search a property in Heeley Green, with a Seat Leon car also seized on Penns Road as part of the operation. Another man, aged 22, is arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, after police swoop at a home on Derby Street, in Heeley, in connection with the shooting at Farish Place. And a third man, aged 20, is arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear or harm, in connection with the Machon Bank shooting, following a raid on Grange Crescent in Sharrow.

MAY 31: Armed police descend on Stubbin Lane in Firth Park following reports of a man with a gun. Two men, aged 21 and 22, are later charged with offences including possession of a firearm.
