Sheffield Crown Court heard on July 14 how Vince Ellis, aged 28, of no fixed abode, threw items at a wall at a property in Barnsley before throwing a pint glass which hit his partner and left her with a piece of glass lodged in the back of her head.

Susan Evans, prosecuting, said the couple had been arguing on April 13 when Ellis threw a table and a phone and as his partner got up to leave he threw a pint glass which hit her on the back of her head.

Ms Evans added the defendant apologised and said he had not meant to hit her and the wound was bleeding and they went to the hospital.

Ellis told police he had thrown the pint glass at the wall and had not intended to hit her.

The defendant, who has previous convictions including an assault against his partner, pleaded guilty to wounding on the basis that he had behaved recklessly.

Francis Edusei, defending, said Ellis had attended to his partner after she was injured and he had insisted and arranged for her to go to the hospital.

Mr Edusei added that Ellis has become drug-free while he has been remanded in custody for a month.

Recorder Richard Wright QC told Ellis: “Couples often argue. They are entitled to, but what they are not entitled to do is to use violence.”

Ellis was sentenced to 18-months of custody.
