Teenage Sheffield driver who killed ‘amazing mum’ in careless driving crash escapes jail

Charley O’Mara, aged 19 and of Mauncer Crescent, Woodhouse, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with causing the death of 79-year-old pedestrian Valarie Marshall by driving without due care and attention.

The teenager admitted the charge and was sentenced to a 40 hour unpaid work order.

She was also handed a 30-day community order to be completed over the next 18 months and was banned from driving for 12 months.

O’Mara was charged after a collision outside Woodhouse Medical Centre on Sheffield Road, close to the junction with Tannery Street, Woodhouse, on Monday, October 1, 2018.

The teenager’s silver Toyota Aygo struck Mrs Marshall as the pensioner was crossing the main road.

Mrs Marshall, who was a great-grandmother, suffered life-threatening injuries in a collision and was taken to hospital but could not be saved and died three days later.

In a statement, Mrs Marshall’s family said: “Valarie Marshall was an amazing mum, sister, grandma, auntie, great-grandma and meant such a lot to everyone who knew her.

“She was the head of our family. Everyone loved and respected her.

“We are pleased that this matter has now been concluded and that we have closure.”

Following the collision, motorists positioned their cars across the road to keep traffic away.

Members of staff from Woodhouse Medical Centre and the neighbouring pharmacy raced to the crash scene to offer emergency first aid before paramedics arrived.
