Cutlery above the rest

EVEN some of the remotest parts of the world know Sheffield for its steel and cutlery glory days.

But as the Far East continues to tighten its grip on those industries, they are something the city itself rarely seems to celebrate.

But a new exhibition beginning next week at the Millennium Galleries will remind some locals and visitors of Sheffield’s peerless reputation.

Moments Of Indulgence goes beyond simply showcasing knives and forks, however.

Featuring new works by some of the country’s leading designers and silversmiths, from August 9 to October 28, the galleries will celebrate society’s most decadent and delightful rituals based around food and drink.

From the taking of tea and cake to the most elaborate of banquets, this collection of brand new pieces takes its inspiration from Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust’s internationally important collection of metalwork.

Moments Of Indulgence will major on innovative new objects of desire via an eclectic exploration of the culinary experience.

The collection includes Sheffield-based maker Rebecca Joselyn’s ‘Screwball and Spoon for Ice Cream’ and ‘By chance or design – old meets new – the glass spoon’, a contemporary wine tasting glass by Andreas Fabian.

From Northern Ireland’s Cara Murphy comes ‘Seed Drills’, a Malteser and candle holder constructed in silver and ebony.

The Association of British Designers and Silversmiths was formed in 1996 by practising designer-silversmiths to promote the best standards of design and craftsmanship and focus attention on the abundance of beautiful, new silverware now being created in the United Kingdom.

Moments Of Indulgence, making its debut in Sheffield, will feature over 30 new works from nationally-renowned silversmiths, celebrated local makers and up and coming new talents, each produced in response to the theme of culinary indulgence.
