Over the last year Sheffield City Council has issued no fewer than 1,675 on-the-spot £80 fines for littering as well as 73 £400 fixed penalty notices for flytipping and other waste offences. Fifteen people have also been prosecuted for the same offences across this period, with £163,200 worth of penalties issued in total.

It comes as the Council confirmed a brazen act of fly-tipping at a nature reserve in broad daylight last month is being investigated by the environmental protection service. CCTV footage shows a white Ford transit van pulling into the side of the road on Stone Lane at Shirebrook Valley on 23 June before one man gets out and appears to begin unloading rubbish from the vehicle before it drives off around 30 seconds later.

Councillor Mark Jones, cabinet member for environment, streetscene and climate change at Sheffield City Council, said: “Fly-tipping is a blight on our communities and environment, which we will not tolerate. Where evidence allows we always take action against the perpetrators. We ask anyone who witnesses fly-tipping to report it, wherever possible with supporting evidence.”

Last year Sheffield was named as the fifth-worst fly-tipping hotspot in the UK. This week residents in Sharrow, which was dubbed ‘one of the UK’s coolest neighbourhoods’ in May, complained about ‘disgusting’ rubbish strewn across their neighbourhood, including underwear and toilet roll.

People can report fly-tipping on the council website at sheffield.gov.uk/home/report.
