The satellites were launched into orbit by billionaire businessman Elon Musk’s SpaceX project, which hopes to use them to deliver internet connectivity to almost every corner of the globe.

The firm eventually plans to launch 4,425 of the satellites into low Earth orbit 550km above the ground - three times as many that are currently in operation.
