Experience new '˜micro spirit bar' with 300 whiskeys and rare craft beers on Ecclesall Road

'Everybody is doing these micropubs and microbreweries - so we thought we'd do it with spirits and craft beer', said Adrian Walsh.

Welcome to Sheffield’s newest twist on the trend, which opened at the weekend.

Wine and Whiskey on Ecclesall Road boasts more than 300 varieties of American whiskey alone - many rare versions which can’t be found elsewhere - plus coveted craft beers and wines by the glass.

Co-owners Adrian and Mark Sutton have had the venue, formerly Food and Fine Wines, for 15 years.

This ‘micro spirit bar’ venture is the latest evolution of their business after they found a niche importing American whiskeys.

“We’ve got the biggest collection of American whiskey in the north of England”, said Mark.

“Alongside that we are bringing in some of the rare American craft beers which are only available here - if you are a beer fan these are what people read about online and have never been able to get.”

The idea is that people will visit for drinks, whether that be a gin and tonic, cognac or regularly changing craft beer, perhaps before a meal nearby on restaurant row.

Food platters featuring produce from nearby Sharrowvale specialists are served in the day, and pizzas from the Olive Italian restaurant next door, which also opened only this year, in the evenings.

The former deli and wine shop has been given a new look, with salvaged cable reel tables and school chair seating to watch the world go by.

Beer bloggers have already been in, and it is hoped enthusiasts from across the north will visit, perhaps to try a 23-year-old Pappy Van Winkle whiskey at £60 a shot.

Adrian added: “I think with the rise of the internet you can buy anything online, what people want is experiences.”

There are ‘informal tastings’, collaborative food nights and cocktails also planned for the future. Wine and Whiskey is open Tuesday-Saturday.
