Extra police on duty for 'friendlies' clash

EXTRA police were due to be deployed on the streets of Sheffield today amid fears that Blades and Wednesday fans could clash when both teams play at home.

United play Nottingham Forest at Bramall Lane in a friendly match at 1pm, with the Owls taking on Birmingham City at 3pm. Police say they expect around 10,000 fans at each game.

Supt Martin Hemingway, who is responsible for policing games at both Hillsborough and Bramall Lane, said: “On their own both games, with them being friendlies, would be considered low key as far as potential for football violence is concerned.

“But because both Wednesday and United are playing at home concern is heightened.”
