The 1-0 reverse was their 28th loss of the 2016/17 campaign, exceeding the mark set in 2004/05, the last time they were relegated from the second tier.

The Millers are now 21 points adrift of safety at the foot of the division and, with only nine matches remaining, their slide into League One will be confirmed shortly.

The last time a Rotherham side suffered so many defeats was back in 1924/25 when their season consisted of 42 matches.

They had a glorious chance to snatch a point in the dying seconds but centre-half Semi Ajayi somehow diverted the ball over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

Yet again this term, Paul Warne's side conceded a goal on the stroke of half-time, and Andi Weimann's dribble and finish settled a scrappy contest.

The Millers should have been leading by the time the Wolves man rounded goalkeeper Lewis Price to slot home.

Striker Danny Ward twice fluffed golden opportunities to open the scoring, shooting tamely straight at Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme after being played clean through by Tom Adeyemi in the 10th and 21st minutes.

Rotherham were indebted to Price in the 35th minute when he dived to his left to keep out a penalty by Helder Costa who had been brought down by Joe Mattock after the left-back had failed to clear the ball.

Ward was back after injury for the Millers, returning in place of Jerry Yates, while left midfielder Joe Newell was recalled, with Jon Taylor dropping to the bench.

Substitute Jon Dadi Bodvarrson went close for the home team in a second half in which both sides struggled to create openings.

Other than Ajayi's glaring miss, Rotherham's only real sight of goal was a Jerry Yates header over the bar from Anthony Forde after 64 minutes, and they were left to contemplate one more unwanted statistic.

An 18th loss on the road equalled their worst ever tally of away losses in a single season, matching the lows of 1924/25 and 1932/33.
