Flintoff targets place in one-day squad

Andrew Flintoff was in upbeat mood despite Lancashire's defeat to Sussex today and insists he would "love to be involved" in the one-day series against India starting later this month.

The 29 year-old England ace, on his way back from an injury to his left ankle, bowled eight overs in the LV Division One clash at Liverpool and came through them with flying colours to finish with figures of nought for 26.

He has spoken to England's chairman of selectors David Graveney with a view to making himself available for the seven match one-day series against India that starts on August 21.

"I would love to be involved of course I would," he said.

"I sat down and chatted to Grav the other day and told him that I want to be in there.

"I want to get back playing for England but I obviously know to do that I have to perform. I have got confidence in my ankle and I actually believe that I am now ahead of schedule.

"I was always expecting to be fine," continued Flintoff after his eight-week lay-off. "I have been happy with the way that my progress has been because I had bowled a few overs indoors and outdoors."

England's squad for the NatWest series is announced on Monday lunchtime, along with the final 15 for the World Twenty20 next month and Flintoff admitted he will be an interested observer.

"It's been a while since I have been in any squad. Obviously this defeat has not gone according to plan but it is nice to be involved in a game of cricket. It was a competitive game of cricket," he said.

Flintoff will be available for the Twenty20 Cup finals day on Saturday and then Lancashire's LV Division One Roses match against Yorkshire at Headingley on Thursday.

"Once I get beyond next week I want to get back in an England shirt. But I keep saying that these games aren't fitness tests for me because we are trying to win trophies here at Lancashire."
