Former Sheffield MP 'very disappointed' to not make Labour shortlist for South Yorkshire Mayor election

Former sports minister and Sheffield MP Richard Caborn said he was "surprised and very disappointed" after being told he had not made the shortlist to become the Labour party candidate for the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region.

Mr Caborn, who was the first Labour party member to formally announce he intended to stand, said the Yorkshire Regional Labour party had informed him of the decision.

He said: "I was surprised and very disappointed to be informed by the Yorkshire Regional Labour Party, that they have decided not to shortlist me to seek selection as our party’s candidate for South Yorkshire Mayor.

“It is a real shame that the South Yorkshire Labour Party membership will now not be able to have their say on whether or not they thought I could represent them as the local Labour Party candidate for this important position.”

Mr Caborn was minister of sport from 2001 to 2007 and Sheffield Central MP from 1983 to 2010.

A Labour party spokesman said a shortlist of candidates had been completed and that is would be shared with Labour party members so they can select their candidate.

Barnsley MP Dan Jarvis and Sheffield councillor Ben Curran have also stated their intentions to be the Labour party candidate.
