Free CSE books on offer to Sheffield youngsters

Organisations working with young people in a Sheffield suburb are being offered the chance to collect free booklets on child sexual exploitation.

Councillors in Nether Edge have bought booklets from Sheffield Futures with the intention of giving them away to worthy causes in the area.

The booklets are a mixture of stories and poetry written by young people from Sheffield who have been victims of or are vulnerable to CSE.

They aim to pass on advice to other youngsters who may be in a similar situation.

Nether Edge councillor Nikki Bond said: “We decided to spend from the ward pot to buy 100 books so that we can distribute them wherever they are needed within Nether Edge ward.

“Now we need to find out who would like some of them.

“They might be useful for youth groups or clubs, or any organisation of young people.

“We know that CSE perpetrators are of all colours, creeds and genders. It’s not a particular issue in Nether Edge, it’s an issue for young people everywhere.

“Sheffield Futures has released a video of young people reading the poetry and prose written on the subject. It’s very hard listening on a very difficult subject.”

One segment from the book states: “Someone scarred me for life. That someone made me the stronger person I am today.

“Don’t be ashamed, because it’s not your fault. Never feel alone. Never give in to fear, and never feel ashamed, no matter what you’ve done.”

The scheme comes after councillors, including Coun Nasima Akther, put together events with Sheffield Futures including an event at Sharrow Junior School targeted at raising awareness of signs of CSE among women in the area.
