HOUSEHOLDERS across South Yorkshire could be missing out on thousands of pounds' worth of grants to make their homes more energy efficient.

In Barnsley 1,214 residents have received grants in the last year of up to 2,700 under the Government-funded Warm Front Scheme.

The money can be used to help pay for energy-saving improvements, like cavity wall or loft insulation, draught-proofing and central heating.

But 33,000 more homes in Barnsley - and over 156,000 across South Yorkshire - could benefit from a grant, but have not yet come forward to claim.

Scheme director Adrian Hull said: "Thousands more could be warmer and better off and have not yet applied.

People over the age of 60, and those in receipt of pension credit, council tax benefit, housing benefit, or income-based job seeker’s allowance may qualify for the scheme.

Those who receive benefits with a disability element, pregnant women with a MAT B1 certificate, and people with children under 16 who get certain benefits are also encouraged to apply.
