Ghost writers love garage spooky money mystery

PENNIES from heaven had a whole new meaning at a South Yorkshire garage.Coins which rained down on a mechanic have earned a Dexel Tyres' site in the borough a place on a spooky map of Britain!

Former boss Nigel Lee, from Greasbrough in Rotherham, was pelted with the mystery money which appeared to come from nowhere when he was working as manager of what was then Sayers Tyres on Athron Street, at Holmes Market.

And at other times he would arrive at work to find tyres had been mysteriously moved.

Now the strange goings on at the tyre and exhaust centre are included in the latest edition of The Rough Guide to Unexplained Phenomena.

It states: "The garage in Athron Street, Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, had a reputation for being haunted by ghosts of people killed in World War Two. In March 2003, the apparitions gave way to typical poltergeist activity; tyres were moved around overnight and things were thrown around and once, garage manager Nigel Lee was pelted with stones as he worked alone outside.

"But the real curiosity was the continuous lobbing of small denominational coins, witnessed on many occasions by customers and visitors. Nigel said he had collected about 7."

Nigel, aged 53, left the job a year later because of ill health.

He said at the time: "It escalated, but the last straw was when I shut up one night and as I closed the doors two lead weights just hurled themselves at the doors. That scared me."

He had also heard stories of the garage's past from previous tenants at the site. They included tales of other supernatural experiences, including a sighting of ghostly figures in 1961.

He had also been told it was once used as a temporary morgue during World War Two.

But the current occupants of the garage, now known as Dexel Tyres say the ghostly goings on are now a thing of the past.

The strange activities stopped after Mr Lee called in the vicar of nearby St Mary's Church, the Rev Mark Tanner to perform prayers at the site. Mr Lee also brought in a psychic.

Current garage manager Nick White said he was working at the company's Balby site at the time of the incidents and had visited the Athron Street site to see what was happening.

But he saw no strange events and remans a sceptic when it comes to ghosts.

"I took over in 2004," he said. "I've seen nothing unusual, but I understand it was exorcised twice by the time I started here. I'm afraid I'm a non-believer then it comes to ghosts. I'll believe in them when I see one.

"We had a group of ghostbuster types getting in touch with us who wanted to come and stay here overnight about 18 months ago. I said 'no', because I would have had to have stayed over too.

"They'd heard about the story, but they were too late, because there haven't been any reports here for years now."
