Health: Sheffield endocrinologist recognised for his dedication to pioneering clinical research and the highest standards of care

The accolade recognises Professor Newell-Price’s extensive research and clinical expertise in pituitary and adrenal disorders, genetic endocrine disease, neuroendocrine tumours and cancer.

Professor Newell-Price is chair of Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield and honorary consultant physician at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where he leads the Endocrine Service.

His research group, together with that of his colleague Professor Richard Ross, based at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Oncology and Metabolism, focus on glucocorticoid excess and deficiency, common and rare conditions that have major effects on metabolism, cognition and mood. Their discoveries have resulted in new approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

He is the first President elected from outside the US in the Society’s 106-year history.

Professor Newell-Price is also a mentor and supervisor of medical students and graduates, and numerous clinical trainees in endocrinology. He has led nationally on endocrine training programmes, and on the shape of endocrine services delivered in the NHS.

On receiving the honour, Professor Newell-Price said: “I am delighted and deeply honoured to be elected as President of the Endocrine Society, whose staff and around 18,000 members work globally to advance Endocrinology and improve public health.

“As the first non-US President in the 106-year history of the Society, my election reflects the great strength of Endocrinology and Endocrine Research at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and of Endocrine science and clinical practice across the whole of the UK.”

He added: “The rich integrated environment of these institutions has meant that our highly gifted researchers have made seminal observations about causes of disease, pioneered the development of new diagnostic tests, authored international clinical care guidelines, and developed new therapies that are used globally, including chronotherapy for adrenal insufficiency, all to the benefit of patients.

“I am very fortunate to lead and work with exceptionally talented clinical colleagues delivering the full range of Specialised Endocrine care and patient support that has been externally rated as ‘world-leading’, and with those forming our European Centre of Excellence for Neuroendocrine Tumours.”

Professor Newell-Price will serve as President-Elect for a year beginning in June 2023 before becoming President in June 2024.
