Homes dedicated to John's memory

dThe new homes - known as Brayshaw’s Bungalows - are dedicated to the memory of former Rotherham Council housing repairs manager John Brayshaw, who died suddenly last year.

John had the initial idea to build the bungalows, and identified an innovative way to fund the project – using the money saved by generating efficiency savings on repairs projects throughout the year.

Both of the three-bedroom bungalows, on Redscope Crescent in Kimberworth, are designed for wheelchair users and people with a disability. The new tenants already lived in the Kimberworth area, but their previous homes were not suitable for their needs.

The new bungalows were officially opened on October 13 by Coun Dominic Beck, cabinet member for housing, along with John’s widow Barbara and daughter Frances.

Coun Beck said: “Helping people and families affected by disabilities is one of the priorities of Rotherham Council’s new housing strategy. I am pleased to say that both families who have moved in to these two new bungalows love their new homes and it will make a huge difference in their quality and enjoyment of life.

“These new homes are also a fitting tribute to our friend and colleague John Brayshaw. John would have been very proud to have been here today to see his vision become a reality, and these wonderful homes are a fitting legacy.”

John’s widow, Frances, added: “These bungalows are a wonderful testament to John’s dedication to his work, and what can be achieved in these difficult times in local government given some inspiration and creative ways of funding.”
