Hospital set for shake-up

a shake-up of Doncaster Royal Infirmary's buildings will improve patient care, say health chiefs.

Bosses at the hospital have put together a site development plan which they say will look at how to make best use of the buildings on site and how to improve provision of services to patients.

Changes include the mental health services unit moving out of the DRI on December 1 to Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust site in Loversall.

The changes will also look to accommodate Doncaster Primary Care Trust’s new unplanned care strategy for Doncaster, by finding a site for a new Emergency Care Centre.

And it will move the children’s inpatients services into the same building as the Neonatal Unit to meet national education and training requirements.

The hospital also needs to expand the Jasmine Centre breastcare unit, provide patients with a higher percentage of single bedrooms, and address car parking problems.

Chief Executive Nigel Clifton said: “We are making changes to the DRI site now to assure the quality and safety of our services for the years ahead.

“We will bring the Children’s Hospital and the Neonatal Unit together to create a new Doncaster Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

“We will take advantage of the space made available when mental health services move off site. Patients, visitors and staff can rest assured that when these changes are completed, we will continue to provide top-class services from even better facilities.”

Planned changes will see the Jasmine Centre, the urology ward and the medical step-down ward, move from the Women’s Hospital into upgraded areas of South Block
