Looking at life on the road!

THE owner of a flooded shop at Toll Bar is hoping to re-open soon - in a converted burger van.

Jenny Jackson has been unable to trade since the rising waters on June 26 engulfed her shop on Askern Road, in the same building as the Post Office run by husband John.

It could be Christmas before work is completed on repairs to the building, which serves as a village shop, post office and home for Jenny and John - so now Jenny is researching alternatives.

The couple have already moved into a caravan behind their store as temporary living accommodation.

Jenny said: "I've started looking for a mobile shop trailer, something like a burger trailer where you see people selling food. For the first two or three weeks after the flood we didn't really have a chance to do anything about it because there was so much to sort out, but now it is something that we're just starting to be able to think about."

Although many people have left Toll Bar because their houses were flooded, there is now a community returning in both static caravans bought by Doncaster Council and in touring caravans provided by insurance companies.

Many residents have been keen to live near their homes for security reasons.

Jenny said the response locally to the idea of a temporary store had been good, even if it was only open for a few hours in the morning selling essentials such as bread.

The shop lost its stock in the floods and the couple have now removed damaged goods and dried the main building using industrial power driers.

They are hoping to have workmen moving in to begin repair work by the end of this month.
