Man critically ill after attack outside Sheffield pub

A man is in a critical condition in hospital nearly a month after an attack outside a Sheffield pub.

South Yorkshire Police only today released details of the incident outside The Sportsman Inn, Darnall Road, Darnall, on Sunday, December 20.

The 48-year-old victim was taken to hospital on the night of the attack and remains there today.

Detectives want to trace the driver of a taxi, which was parked outside the pub around the time of the attack.

They believe the driver could hold vital information.

A 44-year-old man arrested in connection with the attack has been bailed pending further inquiries.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Detectives investigating a serious assault in Sheffield are appealing for potential witnesses to come forward.

“On Sunday, December 20, between 7-8pm, a man was reportedly assaulted outside the Sportsman Inn, in Darnall Road.

“He was taken to hospital, where he currently remains in a critical but not life-threatening condition.

“A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and has since been bailed pending further inquiries.

“Officers are now keen to trace the driver of a taxi, which was parked outside of the pub, as they believe the driver could hold vital information that could help with inquiries.

“The taxi is believed to have been parked outside the pub around the time of the incident.

“Did you witness the incident? Are you the driver of the taxi?”
