New Sheffield coffee shop brings Gilmour name '˜back to life'

And he’s gone from bricks all the way to coffee beans with the opening of his new shop, Gilmours, at Greystones Road, which sells brews using city roaster Forge coffee and food from popular bakeries.

The opening has been a welcome addition to Greystones -both with residents and visitors to Endcliffe Park just down the road.

It has also revealed a wealth of history attached to the former bike shop, which has also been an off licence and a newsagent in the past few decades.

Brendan, who renovated the building himself, said: “When they said I couldn’t carry on building I knew I had to get another number - and I can carry a coffee cup!

“I’ve always worked round here and liked the properties in the area.

“When I saw the step outside said Gilmours I knew I’d heard that name before.

“At one point there were 28 pubs in Sheffield with his name on, actually the Banner Cross was a Gilmour pub and he’s buried in Fulwood Church.

“So I thought I could bring his name back to life.’

The shop opened to large crowds from the nearby Greystones primary school and medical centre, as well as one special visitor, a resident who lived there when it was an off licence decades ago.

Brendan has also found old Gilmours beer bottles online, which he bought to have on display.

They date back to 1913.

‘Whoever drank these beers probably fought in the first world war’, added Brendan.

Gilmours stocks bread from Depot Bakery, cakes from 4eyespatisserie, vegan treats from Lovely Pear and also from a local baker The Flour Pot Bakery
