'Post-lockdown freedoms come with personal responsibility'

This is a watershed moment as pandemic deaths reduce – though everyone still a tragedy - as we enjoy the sunshine , while front-line workers perspire wearing personal protective equipment.

We as a society enjoy many personal freedoms, our police operate with our consent, without recourse to tear gas and/or water cannons.

However, with that freedom comes personal responsibility.

We have no excuse for underestimating the dangers of a second spike in coronavirus deaths.

Police cannot be expected to bear the brunt of society's indiscipline - isolated instances yes, but not on the large scale we have seen.

Because there is, of course, a cost, as exhausted NHS colleagues working on our behalf need a break to relax, recuperate and enjoy the sunshine too.

Before they return to a huge backlog of non-Covid-19 cases.

They will be horrified at the thought our indiscipline could not only put themselves at further risk, but mean more p andemic patients die.

There are other c onsequences too, of course, such as lockdown measures re-imposed with further damage to our economy, with more jobs lost and places of work greatly reduced ,with loss of job opportunities to both established and school/college leavers.

We have an opportunity to enjoy the easing of the lockdown, to associate more with families , to return to work, children look forward to schooling and holidays here and ultimately abroad.

How we have longed for that, particularly the more than two million of us shielding.

However, those freedoms will quickly be lost if our recent indiscipline becomes more widespread.

We can enjoy both by keeping to new lockdown measures to protect ourselves and prevent more needless deaths.

We will get the future we aspire too if we make the right choices.
