Driver caught three times by tram gate camera never had a warning

I WRITE in support of other letter writers, who argue that is there is no logic behind the few yards of road that are now inaccessible to cars at Hillsborough tram gates, other than the obvious: money grabbing.

My husband received three 60 penalty notices because of the time lapse between committing the so-called offence and receiving the penalty notice 12 days later.

He apologised for not being aware of the new enforcement and asked for the council's understanding. He received no understanding only a rather blunt serves-you-right sort of attitude and a reminder that all fines are payable.

Judging also by the large number of cars still using this tiny bit of road, there seems to be plenty of people unaware of the penalty area - or are confused. The signs are partially blocked when in heavy traffic (especially outside the Co-op when a double decker bus is pulling out) and the other signs are confusing.

I have recently found out, through notices in The Star, that before fines were to be enforced, written warnings were to be sent out first.

My husband received no such warning. Had he done so he would have stopped driving along that particular stretch of road.

Surely, the council have breached their own procedures by not sending out warnings to motorists, prior to enforcement. If this is the case, then surely all fines collected from motorists who did not receive any warning should be reinbursed.

Not everyone buys the Star, not everyone watches the news and listens to the radio and not everyone is aware of the enforcement area.

We are in the process of appealing on this basis of not receiving any written warning and are awaiting the Council's response.

While we are on the subject of the mess at Hillsborough Corner and the diverted traffic on to other roads, is the council daft or what?

The amount of heavy traffic that we have seen coming down the side of The Freemasons Arms pub on Walkley Lane, will eventually cause a major problem because there are already signs stating this is a weak bridge.

The weight that is now on this bridge at any one time is far more than the weight stated on the sign.

This bridge took quite a hammering lately with the swollen river and floods. This situation reeks of the council doing what it does best, mugging the folk of Sheffield.
