Duvet musings: "The pandemic has confirmed how dependent we are on others," says Graham Moore

I reflected over Christmas that on Christmas Day 1989 my life was saved by the skill of the doctors and nurses at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and those selfless people who donated plasma who were so crucial on my treatment.

It reminded me that we all could not survive without the support of family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, front line services, and not least those who take the time to be volunteers and/or become organ and blood donors.

The pandemic has confirmed how dependent we are on others and their discipline/consideration impacts positively on our wellbeing as conversely as it is if we are innocent victims of someone else’s lack of thought/indiscipline.

Hopefully the new year should give us an opportunity to enjoy more freedoms and a long awaited return to normality, if we can navigate yet another increased level of restrictions, maintain our discipline before the roll out of vaccines accelerate.

Christmas Day was a brief opportunity albeit to engage with our loved ones albeit on a restricted basis and reminded us what more freedoms would feel like if we can keep our resolve for a few more months yet.

What a relief it would be to meet colleagues and friends again, to see our elderly relatives who have been so isolated from us particularly in care homes and for those of us suffering to get much needed non-Covid diagnosis/treatments delayed by diversion of NHS resources to the Coronavirus.

To actually look forward to some well deserved summer holidays which will be all the more welcomed by the front line workers who put their lives on hold to attend to our needs so magnificently.

Indeed it was good to see some supermarkets closing on Boxing Day to give much needed relief to their hard pressed workers, which hopefully becomes a permanent feature during future festive seasons.

Hopefully if we do keep our discipline then we can look forward to normal services resuming, not only in education, but in businesses, particularly the hard hit hospitality ones who desperately need to recover.

We can now see a way out of our current restrictions and more freedoms on the near future if we keep our nerve and, above all, discipline.
