Stuck in the midden with you

There was a rumour that at some time in future our humble refuse collector may require a science degree in order to pursue his employment. But it was only hearsay.

This reminded me of a small tenement building my parents shared with our next door neighbour. It was called “The Midden.”

It was a place where all household and domestic waste and much more found its resting place. It was a thankless job for those who were employed to empty it to make way for more of the same.

Yet, even in those days of depression and poverty, there were some things that brought happiness and appreciation to the music lover.

George Gershwin composed Rhapsody in Blue. Gustav Holst composed The Planets.

In the cinema there was Rudolf Valentino.

My dad took me to the Albert Hall in Barkers Pool to hear a recital from that mighty organ there and I’ve never forgotten it. That period was the birth of the wireless too.

And in politics renegade politicians were as rampant then as they are today.
