They described it as ‘bright light followed by a series of other small lights, like burning magnesium.’

Twitter user Matthew Hicks said he also spotted the ‘huge meteor’ over the city.

The UK Meteor Network, a group of astronomers who collect reports of meteor sightings, said they had received more than 21 'fireball' reports over Sunday night.

According to their website, a fireball is ‘simply a bright meteor streaking across the sky’.

They come in a variety of colours and speeds and appear ‘randomly’ throughout the year.
