Eleven-year-old Sophia Mizler and her seven-year-old brother Luca are currently raising money for Bluebell Wood Childrens’ Hospice by running 26.2 miles over the course of eight days at 5km a day.

Sophia and Luca’s dad Gary said his daughter was inspired to help a local charity after seeing other children raising money for the NHS, with brother Luca keen to join in as well.

And he added the energetic pair had initially wanted to run the full distance in one go, but were persuaded that splitting it into more manageable sections might be more sensible.

All three started on Thursday, April 23 and hope to finish on Thursday, April 30.

Gary said: “Bluebell Wood is a fantastic organisation and one that is utilised by a family friend so we know what a great job they do.

“Finding over £11,000 a day in donations to remain operational is no small requirement and with hospices being under financial pressure at this time due to the current Covid-19 pandemic the task is even tougher.”

Gary said the runs so far had not been without difficulties, with both Sophia and Luca developing injuries and the weather threatening to take a turn for the worse.

“I am running with Luca and can relate to the aches and pains that are developing in the legs, tight calves and sore knees,” he said.

“But the weather has been kind and allowed us to enjoy running. I think it may be tougher in coming days if the rain makes an appearance.

“But they remain focused and determined to reach their goal. I’m very proud of them both.”

Bluebell Wood cares for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions both at home and at their hospice in North Anston.

They need to raise £13,325 every day just to keep the doors open, of which only around 9 per cent comes from the government.
