PICTURE GALLERY: Sheffield's lost cinemas

None of them are with us any longer unfortunately, but in some cases the buildings that housed them live on.

If you grew up in the city in the 60s, 70s and 80s, you are sure to remember being taken along to one of these picture houses for a movie treat.

Perhaps a Saturday afternoon, you’d catch the Little Nipper bus into town with your mum or mates, wander through the Hole in The Road and then head for your cinema of choice.

You may remember the much-missed Classic in Fitzalan Square, the building which dominated one side of the street and which will hold many happy memories for readers who saw movies there during its lifespan.

Then there’s the Gaumont in Barker’s Pool - which some older readers will recall as The Regent.

That showed its last film in the mid 1980s before being demolished - and the rather funky and modern Odeon in nearby Barker’s Pool took its place.

There’s also the bygone ABC and that futuristic 80s Odeon to remember.

And can you remember the Anvil Civic Cinema, which was housed in the basement of the recently demolished Grosvenor Hotel?

Of course, a trip to the pictures wouldn’t be complete without something to eat - perhaps a Westler’s hot dog from the foyer or something to eat in one of the city’s greasy spoon cafes afterwards!
