Barnsley and Rotherham MPs pay their respects to Prince Philip following news of his death

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

Barnsley MP Dan Jarvis has offered his “deepest sympathies” following the news, adding that the Duke of Edinburgh was an “important part of a national institution.”
He added: “My deepest sympathies go to the Queen and the Royal family following the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh.
“Prince Philip gave his life to service – from a distinguished and courageous career in the Royal Navy, where he saw active duty from the Mediterranean to the Far East during World War II, to the long, constant, and vital support to the Queen after they married in 1950.

Hide Ad“He provided her with love, companionship, and a private and family side to such a very public life. But he also gave a lifetime of dedication and service to the country himself.
“In particular, his work with the Duke of Edinburgh scheme inspired many thousands of young people to push themselves and their limits. It led me at age 18 to an expedition to the Himalayas, a formative experience, and one I will never forget.
“Prince Philip was an important part of a national institution, and a part of British public life for more than seventy years. As such he represented a powerful link to our past as a country and helped to shape it. His passing will be widely mourned.”
Rotherham MP Sarah Champion said Prince Philip had made her feel “at ease and welcome” when she was invited to Buckingham palace.

Hide AdPaying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, Ms Champion said: “Prince Philip should be remembered as an outstanding public servant who gave so much of his time to public duty.
Shortly after being elected, I was invited with other MPs to Buckingham palace. After the formalities were despatched, I drifted off to admire the art collection. Prince Philip came over and proceeded to describe every painting in intimate detail.
“He was a perfect host, making me, a complete stranger, feeling at ease and welcome. I reflect today on the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, to whom he bestowed a similar gift.”
Alexander Stafford, Rother Valley’s MP said he is “deeply saddened” by the news, adding: ” I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
