Campaigning Sheffield MP promoted to key shadow cabinet environment role
Sheffield Hallam MP Olivia Blake has been appointed to the Shadow Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) team as part of Keir Starmer’s reshuffle this week.
The MP has taken up a newly created role as Shadow Minister for Nature, Water and Flooding.
Speaking about the appointment the Shadow DEFRA Secretary Luke Pollard MP said:
"This new role is a good fit for Olivia. She has championed moorlands and biodiversity in the Peak district with a real passion. If we are to properly address the climate and ecological emergency we need passionate and driven MPs to hold the Government to account and to propose radical changes. We are losing species and habitats at an alarming rate and I'm looking forward to working with Olivia to propose the urgent action required to save Britain's wildlife."
Olivia Blake, MP for Sheffield Hallam, said: “We are living through a climate and ecological emergency and need radical change if we are to protect our communities and the natural world.
"From worsening flooding to a decline in precious species, we can see the impact with own eyes here in Yorkshire.
This is why I’m so proud to be joining the Shadow Frontbench, to be nature’s voice in Parliament. I look forward to working with passionate campaigners and experts from across the country to develop a rescue plan for our natural world.”
The MP has expressed support for improved transport links for Sheffield to address the climate crisis. In 2020, she wrote to the transport secretary asking him to consider the reopening of the Millhouses and Ecclesall station, suggesting it would reduce congestion in the area.
