Barnsley's performing arts and theatres, museums, galleries, and live music venues are an important asset to the area's economy, and they will be able to access emergency grants and loans to stay afloat after being closed for the last three months.
The money will provide a lifeline to organisations hit hard by the pandemic. Funding to restart paused projects will also help support employment, including freelancers working in these sectors.

Hide AdCouncillor Tim Cheetham, cabinet spokesperson for place (regeneration and culture) at Barnsley Council said: “We welcome the proposals to support the arts, culture and heritage sector, which has been very badly affected by the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19).
“This sector is a big economic driver which has a huge part to play in people’s sense of place and identity as well as overall wellbeing, especially in these difficult times.
“We understand that the funding will be distributed by Arts Council England and other specialist bodies such as Historic England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and the British Film Institute.
“Barnsley Museums and all the other arts, culture and heritage organisations within the borough are currently awaiting further details of what the eligibility criteria and bidding process to access this funding will be.”
