If approved by the council, the Sheffield Car Centre at Eden Park, Penistone Road, Grenoside, would be knocked down.

On behalf of the developers, JR Planning Consultants said: "The site is entirely hard surfaced at the moment and includes a substantial existing building. It makes little positive contribution to the quality of the built environment in this predominantly residential area.

"The proposal would deliver a new high-quality building that would provide much needed housing. The retail element of the scheme would also ensure the site continues to provide employment opportunities and contribute positively to the local economy as it does now.

"The scheme would vastly improve the appearance of the site with an attractive new building and the opportunity to incorporate appropriate landscaping."

The flats would all be one-bedroom and the development would have space for 41 cars as well as green space.

Five members of the public have commented on the plans so far, four of whom objected raising concerns about parking, road safety and overshadowing.

One nearby resident said: "This application would increase an already very busy area.

"There are already two businesses opposite which cause endless problems due to insufficient car parking spaces which causes problems for the residents living there.

"Although it states associated parking will be provided this will not be enough for the people using the retail units or visiting the residential dwellings.

"There are numerous schools close by and the school children use this road regularly, this will increase the danger to them. We have already had to put calming measures in at the salt box lane junction as the road is that busy you could never get across."

Just one person commented in support and said: "This planning request has been going on for a very long time, the sooner planning permission is given the better it will be for those of us that live at the bottom of the village.

They added: “A general store or similar would be an asset to all of us."
