More than 250 sign petition for cycle lane linking Sheffield with Peak District

Those who signed it said it would be a “godsend” on the stretch between Bents Green and the Norfolk Arms on the fast Ringinglow Road which is heavily used by both drivers and cyclists.

Hannah Greenslade launched a petition to urge the council to undertake an assessment to see if banks on both sides of the road could be turned into cycle lanes.

In her petition statement she said, if built, it would help cyclists feel safer, encourage more people to cycle out to the Peak District and therefore improve health and wellbeing and reduce risky driving such as overtaking at speed.

Emily Johnson, who signed the petition, said: “Myself and friends regularly cycle on Ringinglow Road. The blind summits coupled with impatient motorists make it hair-raising. A truly segregated cycle land (but properly wide enough, not full of twigs/ glass etc) would be a godsend.”

Bob Bryan, another signee, said: “It’s a very popular cycle route but extremely hazardous. A segregated cycle lane would be heavily used by families and others linking with the (mountain bike) track in Lady Cannings plantation.”

Some who signed suggested other measures that could be put in place including reducing the speed limit to 30mph along the whole road, traffic speed monitoring at the start and end of the road and tolls for motor vehicles to fund habitat restoration.
