Miriam Cates, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge and co-chair of the Town’s Fund Board, said: “This is an important milestone in our plans for the town. This investment will create a lasting legacy in Stocksbridge which will help to re-focus the local economy. Not only are we upgrading the fabric of the town but we are creating new employment opportunities as well as investing in sports, leisure and educational facilities.

“Our business cases outline what this investment will mean for Stocksbridge as a place to live, work and visit – and we look forward to continuing to work with the community on the next stage in the plans.”

Councillor Julie Grocutt, deputy leader of the council and representative for Stocksbridge, added: “We have listened to residents to help us shape the vision for the town and worked together on a plan which will deliver much needed investment for Stocksbridge.

“I would like to thank all the community groups, volunteers and council officers who have worked so hard on getting our projects to this stage, ensuring that we have a strong case for investment.”

It is hoped the board will find out in early autumn if the business case was approved – which will release the funding.

When will the Stocksbridge Towns Fund projects be delivered?

The first phase of improvements – worth £500,000 – to Oxley Park were delivered earlier this year as part of the government’s accelerated funding for recovery following Covid-19.

Work on the next phase is planned to start in spring 2023, providing the business case is given the go-ahead.

Stocksbridge was one of 101 towns in England selected for the Towns Fund – which totals £3.6 billion across the country.
