Postal workers to step up pay action

POSTAL workers in Derbyshire are the latest to walk out in a series of strikes across the UK.

There will be no postal deliveries in the county today and the action will also affect national and international mail travelling via East Midlands airport.

The action by Royal Mail staff is part of a fortnight-long series of strikes which has seen staff take action on different days in different locations. Their aim is to cause as much disruption to the business as possible, with minimal cost to workers.

The industrial action has been organised by the Communication Workers Union.

Workers are protesting against a below inflation pay offer and modernisation plans which it claims will lead to 40,000 job losses.

Royal Mail said the company remained "fully operational" despite the rolling strike action and added it was prepared to meet union leaders to explain its position and the challenges the company was facing.

Staff in Sheffield took industrial action on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last week.
