Rare baby wallabies born at Doncaster's Yorkshire Wildlife Park
Doncaster's Yorkshire Wildlife Park has just welcomed two very cute additions to its animal family in the form of new-born baby wallabies.
The two developing joeys are quickly becoming a sensation at the park - with only one other twin pair reported at a European zoo so far.
As part of a collective of around thirty, the twins’ mother was first spotted with two little heads popping out of her pouch last month.
It is thought many people are likely to travel to the popular tourist attraction during the upcoming bank holiday weekend in order to meet the new arrivals.
Animal Collections Manager Simon Marsh said: “We were very excited to hear the news about such a rarity at our wildlife park.
“It really doesn’t happen very often.
“We are continually striving to improve the visitor experience but these arrivals are a welcome unexpected addition!”
The park, which is based in Branton, is the leading walk through park in the country with a unique collection of beautiful and endangered species. It is home to endangered Amur tigers and leopards, African painted dogs, the country’s only four polar bears, giraffes, lions, monkeys, meerkats, camels and many more.
YWP will be celebrating the BIAZA (British and Irish Association of Zoos) National Love your Zoo week between Monday, May 30 and Friday, June 3 with fun workshops and a trail for children to enjoy, to mark all the conservation work that zoos do.
The park offers entertainment for all the family including education projects, opportunities to get close to some of the world’s most fascinating animals and fun play areas.
It is also a is a leading centre for animal conservation.
Mr Marsh added: “Conservation of animals is at the heart of what we do along with seeing that our visitors have a fantastic time.”
“Visitor numbers have increased every year because word has spread that you will get a unique chance to get close to majestic animals and that it is an attraction for all the family.”
YWP has just added a new outdoor play area, a café with 120 covers along with two new outlets in the newly designed Safari Village shopping area.
