School play looks back at the flood of 1864

A SHEFFIELD school's annual drama production carried additional poignancy this year - as it retold the story of the Great Flood of 1864.

Youngsters at Malin Bridge study the disaster every year, and putting on a play recounting the events which devastated the surrounding area is a regular event.

But this year pupils were only too aware of the floods which affected large areas of the city - including some of their own homes in the Hillsborough area.

“Our annual topic on the 1864 flood is an important way of helping the children understand their local history and heritage,” said a school spokeswoman.

“But this year’s work and the play at the end meant far more than usual, because of all the events of the past few weeks,” she added.
