Sheffield election candidates revealed

All of the city council’s 84 seats will be contested in the local elections, which will be held on May 5.

Candidates for this year’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections, and the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough parliamentary by-election have also been announced today.

All three elections will be held on the same day.

The nominees list reveals that 20 serving Labour councillors are standing down from their wards at this election.

Coun Geoff Smith, who has represented Crookes ward for many years, will not be standing this time.

Coun Nikki Bond, who was criticised by residents in her Nether Edge ward amid the tree felling, will not be standing this time either.

Coun Gill Furniss, who had been representing Southey ward, will not be standing after being chosen by Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough Labour Party as their candidate for the MP by-election following the death of her husband, Harry Harpham MP.

Former Labour Party Chairman, Coun Paul Wood, has stood down from his Richmond seat – along with both the two other Labour councillors currently representing – is now standing in Woodhouse.

Former Mayor, Coun Peter Rippon, has stood down from his Shiregreen seat and will now bid for Richmond.

Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats Group, Coun Penny Baker, will not be standing in her current Ecclesall ward this time - she will instead stand in the Stannington ward.

There will be 372 candidates across the 28 wards in Sheffield, with voters asked to choose three councillors for each ward.

The overall political make-up of the City Council is currently: 59 held by Labour, 17 by the Liberal Democrats, 4 by the Green Party and 4 by UKIP.

To vote in these elections, you need to be on the electoral register. The last date for registration is 18 April 2016. Registering online should take less than five minutes. People will be asked for their date of birth and National Insurance number. These details are checked against Government records to help make sure that registrations are genuine.
