Sheffield Steelers target cup win and third win at Cardiff Devils' rink
Sheffield Steelers won't want to read too much into the statistics ahead of Sunday's Challenge Cup Final in Wales against Cardiff Devils.
After all, in eight meetings this season, Cardiff have beaten them six times.
But behind that bald fact, lies hope.
The two Steeler wins were both at Cardiff Arena, in October and January, suggesting they will not be fazed by being the ‘away’ side in Cardiff Bay.
Steelers’ first win at the rink was a 5-4 victory - three of the goals came from players no longer at the club.
But the man who has scored more often agianst them than any other Steeler this year, Colton Fretter, will be gunning for them again.
Steelers hope to have Andreas Valdix back after a troublesome injury.
And that would be a major boost, according to winger Levi Nelson.
“Valdix is a key player for us, he has been out a couple of times this year and we have really missed him” he said.
“But we are a real deep team and guys are stepping up and playing extra minutes and we are getting the job done” he said.
Nelson said there is a definite play-off feel to the squad at the moment, as the business-end of the season becomes more intense.
With Steelers hosting Coventry Blaze in the Elite League on Saturday, he said his team was confident of getting among the silverware again this season.
“You have got to have goals. And that is what we are here to do, to win trophies.”
Specifically on the League title pursuit, he said: “”We have got Cardiff twice (in the League) and they have got a tough schedule but we will worry about ourselves, it’s one game at a time.”
n Steelers players and coaching staff will head off to Cardiff immediately after Saturday’s game against Coventry, to ensure maximum possible rest and recuperation.
